The right Geotechnical Soils Lab Manager oversees the daily operations of a laboratory that tests soil, rock, and other construction materials. Key responsibilities include managing staff, ensuring quality control and safety, maintaining equipment, and coordinating with clients and engineers. The role requires technical expertise, leadership, strong organizational skills, and familiarity with industry standards and accreditation requirements. 

Core duties and responsibilities

• Staff Management:  
  Hiring, training, and supervising laboratory personnel, and ensuring staff have the necessary certifications. 
• Quality Assurance and Control:  
  Implementing and enforcing a quality management system, maintaining accreditations (e.g., AASHTO R18), and performing quality control reviews on test results. 
• Equipment and Maintenance:  
  Managing the maintenance, calibration, and inventory of laboratory and field testing equipment. 
• Laboratory Operations:  
  Overseeing the testing of soil, rock, and other materials according to industry standards like ASTM, AASHTO, and ACI. 
• Data Management:  
  Organizing and processing lab data, and preparing final reports for clients. 
• Client and Project Coordination:  
  Communicating with contractors, engineers, and clients to schedule testing, discuss project requirements, and address any issues. 
• Safety Compliance:  
  Enforcing safety procedures and regulations in the lab and ensuring a clean and safe workspace. 

Essential skills and qualifications

• Technical Expertise:  
  Strong knowledge of geotechnical engineering principles, laboratory testing methods, and relevant standards. 
• Leadership and Management:  
  Proven ability to lead, train, and coordinate a team. 
• Organizational Skills:  
  Strong organizational abilities for managing staff, equipment, and deadlines. 
• Communication:  
  Excellent verbal and written communication skills for reporting and client interaction. 
• Safety Awareness:  
  A solid understanding of lab safety procedures and the ability to maintain a safe work environment. 
• Experience:  
  Typically requires several years of experience in a geotechnical or construction materials testing laboratory, with some experience in a leadership role. 
• Certifications:  
  Experience with maintaining lab accreditations and a valid driver's license are often required. Professional certifications like NICET or ACI can be a plus.
